If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past 5 years or so, you must’ve heard of In Flames. This band has grown a lot since their great album “Whoracle” and they have released one after the other great album. With their latest release, “Reroute To Remain” they marked another chapter in the band’s history, maturing in sound a lot. Some people hated it, some people loved it. And I belong in the last category.

The band is already in the studios again to record their upcoming album, but in the meantime they release the “Trigger EP”. Actually it’s not right to call this release an EP, since it got the band’s second single “Trigger” as well as some unreleased tracks.

We start off with “Trigger” that every In Flames’ fan knows by now so I’m not going to go in detail any further except to say that it is a nice catchy song that is perfect for a single. A video for this track (and for the first single “Cloud Connected”) has also been included on this disc, which is a nice extra.

This track is followed by an unreleased song “Watch Them Feed” that reminds me a lot of the older In Flames work.

If the new record is going to sound anything like this track, I for one, am going to be a very happy person. Fast riffs and aggressive screams with pounding drums and bass work; a nice piece of art, in my honest opinion. Just like the band’s own version of Genesis’ major hit “Land Of Confusion”. A real masterpiece! The next few tracks aren’t very interesting if you’re not a big fan of the band. A club mix of the band’s first single off of “Reroute To Remain” (“Cloud Connected”) and a Commodore 64 remix of an older song “Moonshield”. The first of these two is still pretty cool and has a lot of the original track in it but with the remix of “Moonshield” it becomes highly annoying. Imagine the older computer games of Nintendo for instance and then think of the music that accompanied those games. One word: ANNOYING!

All in all, this EP is a nice addition for the In Flames’ fans, but when you’re not a big fan of this Swedish band, I suggest you wait until the next full length album, which is due out next year.
