Born Loco is a new band on the nu-metal front in the Netherlands. And one who are quite successful already. After winning ‘rondje flevoland’ in 2001, being selected by Mojo as ‘one of the 25 most promising bands’, and a place on this year’s Fields Of Rock (260 votes on the internet site) they managed to get where they are now, and that is reasonably far. They decided to release a two-track promo CD (a full length is coming later this year). It’s their second release, after releasing demo ‘Safe And Sound Asleep’ in 2001. Then the music, which is a mix of metal, hip-hop and hardcore. So, you can label this band as a nu-metal band? Well, yes, you could do that. But they are better than most of the other upcoming bands in this genre. I wonder what will happen to them when they release their debut album. I think, if they keep on writing songs like this, they are able to reach the same level as Agresion, Brainshake or Curfew.

“For Example”, the first song, has a fucking cool guitar riff, and is built around a cool structure. The second song is more hardcore, bringin to mind comparisons with Biohazard, Primer 55 and Downset. The music sometimes also reminds me of Clawfinger, ‘cause of the raps (the ‘Deaf Dumb Blind’-period) and sometimes of POD with hardcore-roots. A pre on this CD: When I inserted it I immediately noticed the perfect production. You can hear every detail; the drums are clear and transparent. You can hear every (funky) note of the bass player and the singer is also mixed perfectly into the sound. It’s enjoyable to listen to, and that’s important these days; to have a good and clear production (except if your band is called Metallica). Summary: A new Dutch nu-metal band with potential delivers 2 good songs and if they don’t do any stupid things, they can become the Dutch POD.
