After a short glance at the cover artwork and the song titles, I somehow knew that “Disharmonic” was not going to be anything like the usual stuff I listen to and that it would be death metal. I placed the disc into my CD-player and hoped for the best, but alas Doomstone turned indeed out to be death metal. Now, don’t get me wrong, there isn’t anything wrong with death metal, it is just that it is not the usual stuff I listen too and “Disharmonic” must have accidentally ended up in the wrong mailbox. Then again, like Sacred Reich once put it: "Variety is the spice of Life".
Well, what can I say about this CD? First of all the production is terrible, I had to crank up the volume to even hear something. I quickly noticed however that Disharmonic isn’t standard death metal but a mix of death thrash with some more melodic elements, and even some touches of black metal. | |
It takes however till the fourth song, “Killing Ground” before I start to be remotely interested. This track is reasonable with a very aggressive chorus that somehow reminds me of Obituary’s “Killing Time” but that’s due to the almost identical title.
The more I listen to this album, the more I have the feeling that I have heard most of it before. The guitar riffs as well as the slow doom-like rhythm in “Infection” remind of Paradise Lost during their days of the excellent “Gothic” album while the next song “Lost” sounds totally like fellow Germans Agathodaimon’s newer work and it doesn’t end there. If Doomstone really wants to succeed they should work on their originality as well as their sound quality. For now, it is really nothing special. (Frank) |
