Hmmm, a Unique Leader release. I wonder what style of metal this will be. Ah, ultra-brutal death metal, what a surprise!!!

The above monologue is of course utter bullshit, if you have been in the scene for some time. Then you should know that “a Unique Leader release” is the mark for brutal, technical, over the top quality death metal. This is also the case with their latest offering, Severed Savior, who’s debut release comes gnarling, growling, spitting and kicking from the depths of the Californian underground.

Brutality is Law is recorded in the Digisound Studios between August 2002 and January 2003 and released in March of this year. This late review is due to the fact that REZ had some logistical difficulties and I personally blame my wife for the delay because she tricked me into marriage, causing more delay to this review. But don’t let this stop you from obtaining this piece of sick death metal because this is a massive attack on the senses, skillfully executed and adequately produced.

The strength of Brutality Is Law lies in the fact that, besides being a great death metal album, riffs, breaks and vocal patterns are always a bit different than standard. This results in an exciting listening experience and keeps the listener on his toes.

Severed Savior don’t like to write long epic tracks, all tracks are just above three minutes except for the last song which is an instrumental ode to their former guitarist Rob “So Vile” Lumbre who sadly passed away last year. In fact, the whole album is dedicated to him. You see, even death metal musicians have feeling in their guts.

The man responsible for the lyrics, vocalist Dusty has two main subjects on his mind: anti-Christianity and gore, and preferably a combination of the two. I don’t want to withhold you two lyrical gems which showcase his sick humor “I deflowered the virgin Mary, with my most unholy member” and “Plastic donuts, shoved inside your hollow anus”. Sick humor indeed...
