Being the humble internet-reviewer that I am, I wouldn’t dare criticize a solo-album by long-time Depeche Mode musician Martin Gore. Because this band’s work is welcomed by so many fans, it would be very hard to mention Gore’s shortcomings.
And, how typical, although this record is filled with cover songs, you’d really have to look hard to find any shortcomings at all. Of course we’d rather have heard new DM or Martin’s solo work, but hearing him perform songs like “Stardust”, “Loverman” or “Lost In The Stars” proves that the man is more talented than some of the original performers. | |
Although the selected songs were originally performed by highly admired artists, Gore did not opt for their most eminent tracks. Take “Oh My Love” for example; originally performed by the Beatles. I didn’t even know this was a Beatles song. Then again, I was probably born after the majority of these songs was even written, so that doesn’t come as a surprise.
Wonderful to listen to, and although it’s not as good as “Violator”, I think every DM or Gore fan should get this album. And fans of the covered bands might think this is an interesting release too. I rest my case.
