Unicorn Records is one of the last record labels, which was added to the Rockezine label database. This Canadian label is probably best known as the label of Canadian prog band Mystery. The first disc they send me to review was a record by Slow Gin. I wasn’t particularly fond of that release. It was a bit too experimental for my taste. When I received Heon’s “Electric- Acoustic Requiem” and read the info leaflet, I feared I wouldn’t be particularly fond of this release either. I was wrong.

Heon, a fine and rather original name for a band, appears to be nothing more than the last name of the master mind behind the release, guitar player Martin Héon. The theme of “Electric-Acoustic Requiem” is rather pretentious: ‘What is the meaning of our existence?’ To my surprise the album opens with a track entitled “Death”.

In the following songs, Héon takes us through all the different stages of life, after which we end up in “Hell”. Luckily for us, the author shows mercy, after which the listener is taken to “Heaven”.

Héon’s music is based on the idea to create original sounds and extraordinary ambiances. Therefore he explores the acoustic range of his electric guitar by using all kinds of different plug-ins. What strikes me is the great diversity of the tracks, especially considering the limited amount of instruments. The record is as divisive as life itself, so to speak.

In conclusions, this is one of the best instrumental albums of this year. I never thought I’d get into electronic music, simply because I didn’t believe it could sound this good.
