Ah yes, who doesn’t know them on our humble little continent? These crazy Italians sure knew how to make music original and still interesting. With their debut record Too Much Happiness Makes Kids Paranoid the band rose to a new high, especially for a band from this particular country. Apparently, the Italians had been chosen over big names like Deftones and Korn. Although I do not fully agree with this, they did come dangerously close. Next, Linea77 brought us another full-length album in the form of Ketchup Suicide, which I personally did not like very much because of the slight change in style.
Now the Italians are back with another full length; Numb. I for one, was really anticipating this new release by a once great nu metal band. When listening to Numb, you immediately notice that the band has moved even more in the direction of their previous release Ketchup Suicide. The opening track “Venus” gives you a taste of full-blown insanity, but with excruciating vocals and even worse music accompanying the two so-called singers. One thing they should be ashamed of; what was once a fairly aggressive band typified by hate-filled raps and raging screams, has now turned into a group characterized by the most annoying, flat singing ever to exist in the metal scene. | |
I can’t understand how two singers could actually be this bad, but somehow, Linea77 pulls it off, leaving all they were far behind.
The same goes for their music. Again, the aggression is gone in the guitar riffs and has been replaced by uplifting punk-rockish riffs. So once again, you see this band change. In the song “Warhol” they even have trumpets accompanying their crazy escapades. Maybe fun the first time, but this trumpet thing becomes so annoying that you want to tear off your ears! Technically, Linea77 has also changed a lot. The songs are a lot simpler, which is most noticeable in the guitar riffs.
If only Linea77 had stayed true to their older, more hardcore style, they would still interest people outside of Italy. This record, however, seems useful for nothing more than a Frisbee. What was once a hot, tasty, and genuine Italian pizza, has now turned into a floppy mess of dough with rotten toppings. Fortunately, I’m not that hungry...not anymore.
