Someone gave me a huge press kit with the Breed 77 album and somehow it’s very tempting to just look for reasons to burn this record to the ground. I mean; the slick photos, the stack of exultant reviews from all over the world, the big production, the hype they want to create around the fact their from Gibraltar… Wouldn’t it prove my, and Rockezine’s independence and underground credibility? Ha ha, yeah right. Well, too bad! I’m going to join the chorus: this record kicks butt all over the current grunge-mixed-with-nu metal scene. Unlike their counterparts these guys remembered to spice up their songs with some genuine rock and roll. ‘Switch’ is probably one of the best songs on the record (‘probably’ means I might have a different favorite song next year…) as it contains everything I’m looking for in this kind of music; a good and catchy riff, a grooving rhythm section and strong vocals.

On the other hand, the use of rhythmic acoustic guitars in for example ‘Breaking The Silence’ combined with almost industrial-like noise in the chorus works for me as well. It’s the vocal melodies, or maybe the lack of a real melody, that weaken the song. But that’s one of the few weaker parts of the album. But let’s get back to the strong points. ‘Final Prayer’ for instance shows the variation Breed 77 is capable of; Mediterranean melodies, samples, big riffs and interesting tempo changes. If you need a comparison: Alice In Chains is mentioned quite a few times in the various reviews…
