The last few years one after the other indie rock emo pop punk rock hardcore album shuffled its way in my player; a lot of mediocre ones, a few excellent and a lot of rehashed crap. Glasseater’s Everything Is Beautiful When You Don’t Look Down got shoved into my player and I gasped. “Greetings…Goodbye” took me with a left hook, “Art Of Communication” pushed me into the ropes, “Falling Apart” knocked me out.
The band’s up tempo punk rock with emo and hardcore influences is tapped from the same well Hot Water Music is tapped, with fluent, finished songs, good clean vocals, snappy riffs and excellent drumming, keeping the songs from straying adrift. | |
The musicianship on E.I.B.W.Y.D.L.D. (!) is, by the way, excellent on every possible level, this being the band’s forth album, obviously not so remarkable.
By keeping the tempo various, the band restrains boredom from taking over. From overdriven parts, clean verses, emotional choruses and an occasional classic guitar harmony, huddled around in ten songs, handing the album enough breathing room to compete in the crowded trenches of modern rock. Too bad the band loose grip on the end of the album, “Recurring” and “From Cradle To Grave” simply miss the strength of the aforementioned songs. Or is this just me wining? Convince yourself.
