I never really got into the power metal thing; as a genre, I thought it bled itself dry during the mid-eighties. My first reaction when I spun this CD was; "I`ve heard this before". I can picture these guys doing the "synchronised guitar movement" thing on stage with spandex and big hair, but wait ...this is 2003 isn`t it?
With lyrics such as "I am what I am, I just don`t give a damn" (“Disfunctional”) they don`t help themselves much either. This sounds like text written by a friend of mine in his first band at the tender age of 14. And this isn`t a one-off lyrical mishap, the writing formula of Rick Mythisian seems to be hung up on making things rhyme instead of actually having depth or meaning. So my opinion is, if I already don`t have a penchant for power metal and I feel like I`ve heard it before, what is a real fan of power metal going to think?? Too generic, nothing new and certainly nothing to get excited about unless you are a power metal caveman and you`ve never heard of Iron Maiden. | |
The only different or experimental aspect I`ve heard on this album is a "church organ" type sound on “Never To Return`”, but that sadly lost it`s novelty soon after. Next is the biggest rip-off since Marylin Manson`s OBSCENE (just listen to Faith No More`s `”Be Aggressive`”). Track 9 on the album is called “Dark Sunglasses”, and starts with the words; "I wear DARK sunglasses at night, so I can ..." . Having just played the computer game GTA: Vice City I was instantly reminded of one of the eighties songs by Corey Hart called `Sunglasses At Night` which starts with the words; "I wear MY sunglasses at night, so I can....”. Maybe this is one of the biggest co-incidences in musical history but yours truly smells a rat, a copyright-infringing rat at that... these songs sound too alike, I would have appreciated it if they just went and covered Mr. Hart`s version...
