I was surprised when this CD came into my hands. I thought Setherial was already dead and buried, but it’s quite the contrary; they’re as furious as ever. As one of the bands who started this style of black metal (along with a band like Dark Funeral) they haven’t changed a bit. They stay true to their Nordic fast black metal and that is probably also their biggest disadvantage; although it’s a decent album, it lacks diversity. But that has always been the problem of Setherial. They produce excellent music, but after hearing three songs it all starts sounding the same, which doesn’t mean that this is a bad album. Songs like “Subterranean” and “Endtime Divine” are real dark, fast songs with ‘catchy’ riffs. | |
And so is the rest of this album.
This CD was produced in the almighty Abyss studios in Sweden, which gives it a razor sharp sound (as the biography puts it). Well, I think if it would have been less sharp it would have sounded even better, for that would have given it more atmosphere in my opinion. But on the other hand, compare this album to the latest Manes release (a shame I tell you, a shame) and I’m sure we’ll all agree that we have to be glad with bands like Setherial still going on and keeping the black flame alive.
If the previous albums of Setherial made your black heart go boom boom, then you can buy this album without hesitation. (Roelof) |
