One night in Bangkok is a registration of a gig Sodom played this year (I think) in the capitol of Thailand.
The German thrash metal veterans decided to record their show in Bangkok because the fans there are really fanatic about metal (and “One Night In Bangkok” sounds way cooler than for instance “One Night In Paris”or something).
After 2 earlier live CDs “One Night In Bangkok” brings us a really good live album where you can hear a crowd going wild on the simple yet effective thrash metal. Of course the metal fans in Asia are not as spoiled as European fans who have 10 to 20 gigs to choose from each weekend, so when a metal band plays in Bangkok, there is a fanatic crowd thrashing the venue.
Apart from that, it is admirable that a band which has been around for 20 years sounds so energetic and eager to play. The double CD brings us tracks from the beginning in 1984 (“Blasphemer” and “Witching Metal” to a brand new track which has never been played before (“The Enemy Inside”) so there’s something for everyone whether you’re a beer bellied metal veteran or a new thrash metal fan. | |
The sound quality is good despite a few problems they had with the mixing desks and all.
I can not really say anything about how the songs are played in comparison to the album tracks, I didn’t know Sodom before this live album but what I hear is effective and tight played German thrash metal. Funny thing is that I know 3 or 4 tracks from covers done by other bands (“Sodomy And Lust” by Cradle Of Filth and “Blasphemer” by Luciferion) and one cover song done by Sodom themselves (“The Aces Of Spades” by Motörhead).
An added bonus is the video of the track “Among The Weirdcong” professionally filmed by 5 or 6 cameras. I don’t know if they filmed the whole gig but I expect a live DVD in the near future. Back to the CD; this double live album is definitely worth the money and even if you’re only remotely interested in Sodom you should buy it. (Roy) |
