With their fourth album Wellwater Conspiracy show their development has continued to the point they almost sound like a normal band. Mind you, the emphasis is on the word almost. They still sound like they, and their music, could go anywhere. As a band they could go big, they could stay obscure forever or they can become one of those bands that seem to thrive somewhere in between. Their music can go from alternative rock to almost progressive and from sixties psychedelic to singer songwriter with a twist. There’s even electro pop and a couple of big riffs. The two members, Matt Cameron (ex-Soundgarden) and John McBain (Ex-Monster Magnet) are clearly gaining confidence every album. | |
On their debut in 1997, Declaration Of Conformity they tried so hard not to be grunge or stoner rock or anything else related to their former bands that it felt a bit forced. Now they seem to be completely at ease and know what Wellwater Conspiracy is and what it stands for. Experiment is an important word in their vocabulary, but it’s never a goal, just a means to an end. The sound is warm and friendly, powerful when it needs to be and the mix is near perfect. Although the record is pretty varied and diverse the songs form a unity and all fit into Wellwater Conspiracy’s mildly weird universe. (Walter) |
