If you think you might hear a familiar sound or two while listening to Murder Squad… you`re probably right! Murder Squad might be considered to be an all-star band: Matti Karki on vocals and Richard Cabeza on bass (both from Dismember) while Uffe Cederlund and Peter Stjarnwind from Entombed handle respectively guitar- and drum-duty. So with the opening guitars and bass there is no question that these guys didn`t invent new tricks, instead they just do what they are good at. Shred. Then the vocals are added, and you`ll have that big Dismember sign flashing in your head.
So what do people from Entombed and Dismember play when they`re together? Death/rock? No, not really. Murder Squad is nor Entombed`ish, nor Dismember`ish, even though the latter would be closer. What they do on Unsane, Insane and Mentally Deranged could be considered as an hommage to the deathmetal sound of the eighties, when bands as Autopsy and Suffocation were common share. | |
And they do it well: in 33 minutes they go through a 12-song set, meaning no time for fancy-pansy technical guitarsolo`s or keyboard crap.
Even the songtitles are a good reminder of that 80s era. Who didn`t grew up with songs listening to titles as "Slowly Burnt To Death", "The Return Of The Rotten", "Spraying Led", "Bloodfreak", "Sent Home In A Box" or "Horror Eternal"? All written down in the Wolverine Blues-typeface, I might add. With that, the conclusion is simple. Murder Squad is a big nostalgic trip back to the eighties, yet brought to you with the sound of the late nineties. Fans of Entombed and Dismember will love this. Fans of Autopsy and assorted will cherish this. Must-have. (Xander) |
