Sacriversum is a Polish gothic death metal band with already a lot of albums under their belt.
“Mozartia” is their second ‘tribute’ album. The previous was dedicated to the famous Irish writer/poet Samuel Becket. And this one, as you probably guessed, is about Mozart.
It describes the life and works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and although I expected the music to be inspired by the compositions of this world renowned composer but the only thing Mozartian about “Mozartia” are the lyrics. I’m not the greatest classical music lover ever alive but I do know most of the famous bits and pieces and I didn’t hear any of them.
If I may use a cliché; the voice of female singer Kate is one you’re going to love or hate. The positive thing about her is that she isn’t a soprano; something I did suspect after I read the term gothic death metal. She sings with a normal voice and like I said it’s one you like or not. I personally did like her voice to a certain extent although she isn’t a good singer in the usual meaning of the word. | |
She sings in her own way with a lot of power, sometimes even too much, like when she almost screams in “Count Coloredo”. Furthermore she has a thick accent she should work on.
The music is not very original I regret to say, it fits the term gothic death metal and stays well within the boundaries of that genre. But it also sounds a bit tame and is played way too clean. If it is meant to be metal then play it like metal, I’d say. With a grunt like singer Remo has, you should be able to record an album that’s more than mediocre.
I have the feeling Sacriversum can do way better than this, so maybe next time it will be more convincing.
Still, “Mozartia” is fairly enjoyable as background music. It’s really easy listening but I can’t imagine that was their meaning.
