There are two singers in (rock) music, who look like a gnome, but when they start singing, turn into a solid wall of vocal sound. One of them is Kevin Coyne, the other is Ronnie James Dio, the former singer of the legendary bands Rainbow and Black Sabbath, but also featuring an impressive solo career. The little man with the BIG voice has recorded a show at the Roseland Ballroom, from the 2002 tour, for all of us to hear and watch. Befitting the man’s humour, this show was on Friday, the 13th of December.

Every time I’ve seen the man in action, I’ve been impressed. This live recording is no exception: a solid show with a set list containing a nice overview of the man’s career. The Rainbow classics “Man On The Silver Maintain” and “Long Live Rock And Roll”, separated by an overwhelming guitar solo by Doug Aldrich, and of course Black Sabbath’s “Heaven And Hell” are included.

Although the man isn’t getting any younger, his voice still roars like a hurricane. Unlike many of his age, he can still make it happen on stage (and even give it something extra). The same goes for ‘good old’ Jimmy Bain, who still expresses a lot of fun and craftsmanship. Doug Aldrich is also pretty convincing in sounds, timing, and ‘feel’, at least much better than last time I saw him with Whitesnake. Simon Wright (D), and Scott Warren (K) do exactly what they’re expected to do: everything in addition to the music.

The atmosphere of this DVD is caught to the maximum with a mix of full colour, black (brown) and white, and marvellous camera (editing) work. The bonus material contains an interview, photo gallery, the video “Push” and some offhand (spontaneously looking) ‘behind the scenes’ material.
