THE MARS VOLTA

One of the gutsiest bands out there this moment. Their eclectic overall rock sound with influences from seventies swirly stuff to contemporary rock works like a Tyson left hook. A sound which only reminds of At The Drive In in Cedric Zavala’s piercing vocals and the overcrowded guitar corner of their sound. Rick Rubin gave it his trademark and once again lifted a band just a little higher on the ladder of creatively challenging bands.

De-loused In The Comatorium is not an easy effort. It takes a lot of you but as the cliché goes, you do get a lot back. Catchy structured songs like “Inertiac Esp”, catchy structured songs with epic length like “Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)”, jams and improvisations like “Cicatriz Esp” and a lot of The Mars Volta because there is undeniably a lot of uniqueness in their sound.

Kinda like that feeling you get when you listen to early Tool. There is stuff happening here on every frequency, on every possible tape track.

The fact that Flea from the Peppers did the bass parts is absolutely futile. Even his usually overwhelming playing is just a piece of the The Mars Volta puzzle, but together they sure know how to overwhelm. Once the album starts to make sense you’ll be in a tantalizing state of mind. This is without a doubt one of this years’ finest.
