Wow…now this is something different. Really different. Gojira (Japanese for Godzilla, and also the previous name of the band) from France released an album that defies proper description in the form of The Link. It is undeniably metal but to describe the style is almost impossible.
The only description I can give you is something like “the sound and feel of Morbid Angel’s Formulas Fatal To The Flesh mixed with the more groovy parts of System Of A Down. It’s a poor attempt to fully convey the diversity and originality of The Link but it will have to do. These Frenchmen are so determined to follow their path that they don’t hesitate to include a xylophone intermezzo (“Connected”) and a very basic keyboard/guitar interlude (not to mention the Tibetan monks in “I Embrace The World”). | |
These are followed by more brutal tracks, firmly rooted in death metal that will appear more to metalheads but I myself think these melodic parts are just as important as the “metal” tracks. The contradiction between the two is the thing that makes The Link stand out.
To fully judge Gojira you must listen to the music, there’s no way to describe it accurately. If you are open-minded and willing to invest some time into The Link this will be a more than worthy addition to your collection.
