The country of metal, Greece, produces another heavy metal act. They are actually quite scarce considering the popularity of the scene. No matter, Wolfcry delivers exactly that what you’d expect from a Greek band: old school heavy metal. Sure, there’s some more modern melodic power metal elements but the core is definitely eighties heavy metal.
Having said that, you can basically draw the conclusion yourself; “Nightbreed” is indeed not the most original albums you will ever hear (do I hear someone say Iced Earth?). On the bright side however, it is very well played heavy metal with good shredding riffs and decent vocals. Sometimes one should stick to a successful recipe and Wolfcry does just that.
“Nightbreed” is already Wolfcry’s second album but I have to admit I have never heard of this band before, which is a shame because this quartet delivers some good old school heavy metal. | |
The first song that really hit me was the excellent “Vanguard”. This song rises far above the rest of the album. It is a mid tempo banger that just forces you to move your head. You just can’t help it. One other song which is really worth mentioning is “As Darkness…” which features some good riffing and a great epic atmosphere.
Apart from the lack of originality, the only real drawback of this album is the fact that not all songs are of the desired level. Several songs are a bit too boring, and lack power as well as necessary hooks. Nevertheless if you dig old school metal like Iced Earth, and you don’t really care about originality then you might want to check these guys out. (Frank) |
