I didn’t really expect anything, when I received the new Ill Nino album. Their first album, Revolution/Revolucion was a good album, energetic, catchy and emotional, but at times sounding a bit too simple. Ill Nino is a band that doesn’t want to be original, but just wants to make good (nu)-metal with traditional influences and a high level of energy. I have to give it to them: they’re really good at it.
Don’t expect complex riffs or tough musicianship. Expect another Revolution/Revolucion, with some style changes. The production is better, Bob Marlette did a job well done. He gave the album a ‘big’ sound, comparable to the latest release of Mnemic or Fear Factory. The songs are just a little bit better. It has more of a metal feel than the first one. I don’t know if that’s the reason why their guitar player left (replaced by former Machine Head guitarist Ahrue Luster), but it sounds more serious now. | |
For example listen to opener “Te Amo…” or “When It Cuts”. They also held the traditional influences (“This Time It’s Real” and “Two”). Showcasing a lot of ethnic rhythms, this album is really dynamic. At times, it kinda reminds me of our Dutch pride: Dreadlock Pussy.
Talking about the lyrics: they are horrible. My 2 year old bunny can write better lyrics than Christian, and less predictable. Oh my god, they are really, really embarassing. The songs will easily find their way into your head, but the question is: isn’t that a bad thing, are the songs just too simple? Is the album written too hasty? Well, I think everyone has to answer that question for himself. However, Ill Nino will surely consolidate their spot within the nu-metal crowds. A spot high up on the ladder.
