Nightfall returns to the metal front with their fourth album. “I Am Jesus” featuring melodic heavy/death metal with a touch of black (mainly due to the vocals) and lots of keyboards. It is a bit in the vein of Moonspell at the time of “Irreligious” was released. They also came from an extreme metal background and gradually introduced (too many?) other influences.
The sound on “I Am Jesus” is overwhelming, the vocals are doubled or even tripled and this creates, also due to the strong voice of singer Efthimis Karadimas, a massive sound.
The production was done in the Tico Tico studios in Finland and they did an excellent job, the drums sound fantastic and the guitars too.
Nightfall sure have the skills to play some mighty atmospheric music but they have to work a little on their song writing skills. | |
The tracks are not all that memorable and they sometimes use too much repetition (e.g. 24 times the line Death Of Neira in the first track, you may guess how the song is called). But taken as a whole this is a strong album.
The heavy use of keyboards adds to the overall symphonic feeling of the music and although I tried to label Nightfall earlier in this review, every time I hear the record I discover new influences and sounds. Despite that, the general atmosphere on “I Am Jesus” is fairly consistent.
If you think Moonspell became too soft between Irreligious and Sin/Pecado and you like this style of metal you may want to try out Nightfall, if you didn’t already know them.
