With the departure of Ron Schoonwater (who was the usual man to handle `these kinds` of bands) out of the REZ ranks, the debut album of Anyone was shoved in my direction. Anyone, a threesome from the USA with a different attitude toward music, that soon became clear when I first listened to this album. I wouldn`t label this a Nu Metal band but a band that has captured a lot of styles into one band. The most obvious reference to me is Jane`s Addiction and that`s because singer Riz Story`s voice resembles Perry Farrels` in the harder parts. No copycat though, it just a resemblance. I also hear influences of Warrior Soul (the heavyness of some songs) but also the spirit of Seattle from 10 years ago. When grunge was underground and Pearl Jam unsuspectedly released their first album, add a flavour of U2 here and there and there`s the still very original Anyone music style
Anyone has a very rich sound and isn`t afraid of melody, a thing that causes my disinterest for Nu Metal bands, they often scream, shout and cry without feeling, guitars are tuned heavy but no impressive riffs ever comes out and drummers often beat the same drum over and over. | |
This album surprised me big time because at times it tells me that THIS is what Nu Metal should sound like. Dark, furious at times Heavy Metal was once born out of early rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Nu Metal continues that tradition; inherit the past and transform it to something new. Anyone is on that actual track and I hope they will keep moving on it, without being a Nu Metal band. Unlike a lot of bands that are Nu Metal now, I think this band will grow even more when they can maintain this attitude and won`t be treated as musical clay for the record company. Surprise of the year!! (Winston) |
