About a year ago Mostly Autumn released their first DVD called “The Story So Far”. This month the band will release their new DVD with the applicable title “The Next Chapter”. The DVD is a collection of different songs. This is not just because of the music, but most of all because of the mix of live material, material shot on location and a couple of video clips. This is a format which works out quit well and shows all faces of Mostly Autumn.

Luckily the expected changeable quality in sound and images between the different tracks is only obvious in the sound of two tracks recorded in New Jersey which is slightly less. Personal favourites are the songs recorded at the open air gig in Canterbury, Mean Fiddler and the Borrowdale recordings.

In comparison to the previous DVD, this new release clearly shows the progress the band made. The different members of the band for example seem much more relaxed under the pressure of the camera’s. Another aspect that has improved is the choice of lights on stage and the choice of close-ups.

If there has to be some criticism about this DVD than it would probably be that some of the camera shots that picture the bandmembers around a campfire or surrounded by ferns.

Nevertheless the format of “The Next Chapter” is the next step into the replacements of CD’s by DVD’s. I for one could imagine the next studio album being a full version DVD with studio, live and promotional video footage.
