For fans of Van Der Graaf Generator this long awaited DVD must be the ultimate addition to their collection. Godbluff is probably one of the band’s most successful albums and during the 1975 tour the band played an integral version of this album. The show the band played in the Palais Des Expos in Charleroi is recorded for Belgian TV. This means that the sound is good and the footage is of high quality, especially considering the age of it. On the downside, the performance is rather serene (it reminds me of the DVD Meet The Flower Kings). I’m not one hundred percent sure, but I think the entire gig is recorded in a TV-studio, in absolute absence of audience. The rather static performance and the lack of interaction between the band members is being compensated by delicate camera movement and a lot of close-ups and a lack of overview pictures. | |
Some time ago Classic Rock Productions released the DVD/CD Masters Of The Vaults. The video footage available on this release was added as bonus material to the Godbluff DVD. The cover of the DVD states that the recordings are re-mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1. As mentioned, the sound on the disc is pretty good. This release is, concerning the footage, most of all a historic document of a truly progressive seventies band; Van Der Graaf Generator. Fans will absolutely dig this DVD. I will be playing this disc in the future, but I doubt wether I’ll put my TV on as well.
