Early 2003 Mostly Autumn played the Grand Opera House in their hometown York. This show was filmed for a Classic Rock Productions DVD release. To my delightful surprise the usual thirty second interviews between songs on CRP DVD’s are reduced to a short introduction interview and some behind-the-scene footage after the show.
The footage on this DVD is of fine quality and quite entertaining. The visuals are taken care of to the smallest detail. During the first three, more up-tempo songs the accent lies in the dynamic presentation of the band, by extensive use of stage lights and lots of changing camera points. Some of the video footage is being shot from the back. This footage is the weakest on the DVD because it shows the backs of the musicians and also because the stage was lit from inside the hall, turning most of the musicians into silhouettes.
The following four tracks are more down tempo. These more emotional songs are being supported by video projections, which are included completely as a bonus feature on the DVD. | |
What makes this show special is the inclusion of a string quartet and a choir. Most video footage of this foursome is however taken from the rehearsals (this was probably done to reduce the amount of camera’s on stage during the show). This footage is included in black and white, so as a viewer you are always aware of what footage you are watching.
Mostly Autumn played two covers during this gig; “Smoke On The Water” and “Comfortably Numb”. Both tracks, in my opinion, would have worked better if Brian Josh did the lead vocals. The final track on the DVD is “Pass The Clock”, my favorite Mostly Autumn song ever. The DVD features Dolby Digital as well as DTS, and both sound very good. A lot has been said lately about the frequency with which Mostly Autumn is releasing DVD’s and live albums. You will not however hear me complain, since these releases are still improving. At The Grand Opera House is without a doubt the best Mostly Autumn live release so far. I have serious doubts whether they are able to top this one.
