Michael Harris is an American multi-instrumentalist, although his main instrument is the guitar. Words Collide is his fifth solo-album on which he plays all instruments, but it’s his first all vocal release. The album starts pretentious with a track with the well chosen title “Shockestra”. This one draws the attention and flows into “Wash My Soul Away”. Heavy guitar play is alternated with melodic choruses and harmony vocals.
On “Mask Of Deception” Harris starts with a bluesy intro turning into powerful heavy rock. This is one of the best songs on the album, most of all because of the experimental vocal melodies and the great alternation in rhythm. | |
The same goes for “Myopia”, a more acoustic track with fantastic drum rhythms and distorted vocals.
Listening to Words Collide is a small adventure. You are often amazed by the direction Harris is taking you, and by the means which he uses to guide you. Usually I’m not too big a fan of the experimental stuff, but somehow everything Harris brings into his music works. Words Collide is an album well worth listening to.
