Abominator is formed way back in 1994 by Chris Volcano and Andrew Undertaker (I love these typical Australian aliases). The band released their first demo in 1995 followed by a split cd with Mornaland in 1997. After the usual line-up changes, Damon Bloodstorm (bass and vokal lust) left and was replaced by Max Krieg (vokills) and Valak Exhumer (bass attack), they signed with Necropolis Records and recorded their debut album Damnation Prophecy which is released in 1999. In the following year the band left Necropolis and inked a 3 album deal with French Osmose Productions. Nuctemeron Descent is the second album of this deal.

Abominator plays a chaotic type of blackened death metal, slightly comparable with label mates Antaeus and Arkhon Infaustus. The sound is extreme and the first couple of songs are received well by your humble reviewer. The production is powerful and very suitable for these barbarians, sounding filthy yet brutal. But after a couple more songs I begin to wonder if they are still playing the same song.

Every track is played at the same pace and the riffs don`t differ very much from each other. A typical Abominator song is structured like this: the intro is most of the times a couple of seconds long, an eerie keyboard piece of some slower played riff. After that the drummer starts to blast and then the blasting continues for five minutes. Riffs are played and vocal chords are shredded. This is done nine times in a row and then the album is finished.

It’s not that I don`t like my daily dose of mayhemic death/black, but a little diversity is not too much to ask for I think. If they paid more attention to that, this would be a killer release because like I said they sound extreme (and very Australian) and know how to play their instruments. If you like bands like Antaeus, Sadistik Exekution and in general Aussi extreme metal you should check it out. If the band will focus a bit more on songwriting, the next album will be a blast.
