A couple of weeks ago Al Atkins’ third solo album “Heavy Thoughts” was re-released by Market Square. The fact that Atkins is the former singer of Judas Priest in mind, the reason for this re-release seems to be the Judas Priest 2004 World Tour. So, what is there to say about this album? In the opening track Al himself gives the answer: “nothing is changing”. For people who don’t know this album, you won’t be surprised. It’s exactly how you expect it to be. Great sound and fine music, all in the vain of early Judas Priest.

Although the original CD was released in 1995 most tracks sound remarkably fresh. The only exception is “Price Of Love”, which sounds corny. The album features two previously un-released bonus tracks from recent recordings. These songs are rougher. New guitarist Simon Lees is foremost responsible. His playing is just too dominant for my liking. Atkins seems to be breaking with his bluesy emotional approach and goes for a more straight rock approach instead. Not a wise decision because these songs are rather mainstream.
