This is not an ‘in the memory of’ album, cause The Apers are very much alive, wild and savage. The thing is, they’ve recorded so much in the years of their existence it’s a waste to leave all of that in some drawer somewhere. Therefor: Singles & Outtakes 1997-2002. All kinds of tracks make their appearance. Some released on various sampler albums, some released as demo tracks or 7” EP’s, some never released and an Undertones cover.
I’m sure the band had doubts about putting the old demo tracks on this release but it has a function. It’s part of the saga, showing you the progress they made throughout the years. And some songs may rattle like two-chord garage mayhem, recorded on a four-tracker after only two rehearsel sessions, it’s still a part of their past. | |
So get this. If Singles & Outtakes 1997-2002 is filled with extra tracks that didn’t make it on to their regular albums, kinda makes you wonder how great their regular stuff is. Well, actually it is great, but that would be another review. Anyway, for those who never heard of The Apers. This is one of the biggest and most popular garagepunkrock outfits in Holland. With a tour in the States on their resume (with Groovy Ghoulies), gigs all over Europe and a zillion gigs throughout Holland (is that possible? Yes it is). So, as great tracks with great titles such as “I Hate Guys With Girlfriends” and “Drama Queen (Of The Local Scene)” fill the room I come to think I’ve never seen this band play live! Go figure.
