Postrock has its origin in the seventies with bands like Led zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Long songs are typical for this style. The new breed of postrock is becoming well known among those who want to hear more than the next Creed, Korn or Get Up Kids. Bands like Cave In, Explosions In The Sky and Mogwai are some of the bands that took this genre to a higher level and the style is still winning popularity.

13 Curves is a Dutch postrock band, that already played with a band like Six By Seven and recorded this EP with Niels Kater from Zober. Info you can put in your biography, and they did. But 13 Curves cannot be compared to the aforementioned bands. Because of a few things:

1.Their cd has a sort of dusty feeling. Production is to blame for that. I don’t know if they did it on purpose, but it’s not an excellent production, just one that fits the music.

2. The music is different from other post rock bands. 13 Curves do not go back and forth in dynamics, but rather remain on one constant level.

What they’re good at is creating superb riffs and a good climax. Listen to “Hapiness Is Just An Enduce State Or Mind” and you’ll know what I mean.

The aforementioned song is the best, because of its structure and its desparate atmosphere. But “Lady Day” is also a song well worth mentioning. This is the first song that reminds me of Mogwai’s Come On Die Young record. Which is not disturbing, it’s cool to hear that a Dutch band has this quality. You don’t have to be born in Great Brittain to know how to play this type of music. And I think we Dutch can be proud of this band. Only, with a better production (without losing that atmosphere) and a few more spherical songs like the last one, including more dynamics, I think they can reach quite something. After Festina Lente and Mind Shelter, 13 Curves is the third band from Holland that suprise me in 2004.
