Equal to the darwin theory, In Flames changed.
You have the ape (the jester race) that transformed slowly (Colony), but sooner obvious (Reroute to Remain) and it begins to have some signs of a human being (Soundtrack to your escape).
What I mean is: In flames, once an exponent of the Gothenburg scene, and well respected in the death metal area there, evoluates with every album they make. Every time they’re putting more melody’s in the songs, a more open, transparent sound. Almost nu-metallish.
Soundtrack to Your Escape(brilliant title) is In Flames’ sixth outing. And what can you expect this time? I know some metalheads didn’t sleep and had some fearattacks, `cause of the thought In Flames definitely turned to nu-metal. That has not happened, and I wonder if they ever will.
This time, In Flames builds on the ground that Reroute to Remain was. | |
It is an album in the same direction. The melodies, the relatively soft songs (‘Evil in a Closet’), the Deftones-comparisons again, in ‘Like You Better Dead’, but also the brutal riffs and chopping tracks, like ‘Friend’ and ‘Borders and Shading’.
I think In Flames have found the perfect middle between Nu and Death Metal. I am curious how this album will sell and how many metalheads will give up their hope, concerning this band. They have a new single, ‘The Quiet Place’, a catchy song with some hooks, so there is a chance that In flames catches the attention of some modern metal listeners. If that is a good thing, we will see with the next album. For now: Soundtrack To Your Escape is an nice metal CD, but I think this album is important for the next stop for In Flames. Now: Which way to go?
