Glenn Benton and his comrades have been playing death metal as long as I can remember and probably will go on until they die of old age. As one of the founding fathers of the Florida death metal scene, they always have done their own thing, ignoring trends and hypes, steadily releasing album after album. Their self-titled debut CD Deicide is a classic, 1992’s “Legion” even more but there were also a few weak albums in the form of “Insineratehymn” and “In Torment In Hell”.
Having finally fulfilled their obligations for Roadrunner they inked a deal with Earache and have now released an inspired yet traditional Deicide album
“Scars Of The Crucifix” is short, only 26 minutes, but in that time span they manage to spit out nine typical Deicide tracks. Raw uncompromising death metal with the typical, doubled, vocals of Glenn. The song structures are quite simple, the choruses sometimes too predictable and the solos are completely insane yet still they are blasting the puss out of your brain. | |
I can give you no real highlights cause the album stands as a whole, each track is part of the ongoing death metal attack fuelled by anti-Christianity and Satanism. Titles like “Mad At God”, “Fuck Your God” and “Go Now Your Lord Is Dead” prove that Glenn is still as angry as ever. As long as it results in excellent death metal albums like this one, no one should complain. For all you DVD-fetishists out there, the limited edition of “Scars Of The Crucifix” comes packed with a bonus DVD on which the band shows how though and manly they are. The typical male American macho ingredients are all included: cursing, drinking, riding choppers and shooting guns. It’s a good thing it’s free. (Roy) |
