Manigance is a French melodic power metal band. On the TV-show ‘Alas Smith & Jones’, years ago, Griff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith told us that the French are completely incapable of making pop or rock music. If we are to believe Smith & Jones, Frenchmen are famous for the catch phrase ‘Pump up zee volume!’. But then, in 1998 –just after Smith & Jones quit- the band Out released ‘X-position’. Refreshing Nu-metal, produced by Colin Richardson. Now, Manigance’s third album D’un Autre Sang (Of Another Blood) is here, and it is quite, if not, very good.
Singer Didier Delsaux has a good power metal voice. Not too high-pitched, just good. He sings in French. Normally I like to understand what singers are talking about, but with power metal it doesn’t really matter, ‘cause lyrics in this genre mostly aren’t all that brilliant –battles, swords, warriors-. Also, power metal is quite expressive, so you can pretty much make up your own storyline to the songs. Although ‘Mourir en hero’ –warriors-, ‘Empire Virtuel’ –battles- and ‘Hors La Loi’ –outside the law, warriors- are quite obvious and perhaps standard, it doesn’t matter. | |
Instrumentally, they are fabulous. Best thing is the percussion. Diverse, fast, smashing and sensitive drums. Bon travail, monsieur Pouylau! The guitarplay is also flawless. Very diverse, powerful when needed, with ruthless solo’s. Sometimes you think they could also put in a couple of less inimitably fast solo’s, but that’s how it goes with fast melodic power metal.
During all the songs there are keyboard sounds to provide a background. Also, well done.
In a song there are many different parts to keep it interesting. At song 8, ‘Damocles’ –swords- you still want more. Then, with ‘La Mort Dans L’ame’ (Death in the heart), they slow it down. Even a slow solo this time. Good timing, otherwise your ears would grow tired. Le track prochaine, the title track, speeds things up again. ‘Enfin Delivré’ (Finally Delivered?) closes off the album in style: another good power metal song with all the ingredients. 55 minutes of quality power metal.
