A drum computer can sometimes really add something to music. For example, Limbonic Art or The Berzerker wouldn’t sound the same without it and wouldn’t be able to create such music without electronic help. Most of the times the drum computer is being used by lack of a drummer of flesh and blood and in these cases, it usually sounds too mechanic.
In the case of Devil Music Inc, the drum computer is a substitute for the drummer they lacked during the recording of this demo. However, by now they luckily found a living one because with this kind of music, metalcore, a drum computer just isn’t fitting. It all sounds clean and sterile instead of organic and aggressive, which should be the aim for a metalcore band, in my opinion. Sadly, the production of the guitars is also clean and sterile. | |
Everything is so flattened out that all tension is gone. In that vein is the last track, taken from the 1999 demo, more pleasurable. Although it has a more demo type production, it also sounds more aggressive.
If you listen to the music instead of the production, you’ll discover that these guys certainly know what they’re doing. Singer Eric has a nice throat and makes use of some interesting vocal lines. The songs however are too uniform; it all sounds a bit the same, which weakens the release.
For a next release, I hope they’ll use a human drummer, write songs that are more diverse and be able to aim at a better production; so it will stand out of the masses.
