Ethereal Hunter is a demo (Mytholic’s second) containing three old school metal songs that at times remind of Iced Earth. There are some excellent ideas on this demo, and especially the title track is too my liking, with an excellent keyboard interlude halfway the song. However, the sound quality is pretty terrible and ruins most of the music. The guitars drown in a wall of noise, and only the vocals are really clear, which is a shame because the vocals are definitely the weakest part of Mytholic. Singer Willy does fine when he screams but when things get more melodic he is struggling. Unfortunately, the drums are totally muffled into the back, sounding slightly weird.
The second track - “The Dark Side Of The Hill” - is pretty decent too. | |
This song is more melodic and dynamic with good mood changes and outbursts of aggression. Somehow it sounds terribly familiar but I can’t really put my finger on it. The final track - “Aeons” - is by far the longest, and although it has some good parts, I find this one slightly boring and longwinded. Besides, the melody isn’t quite as catchy as the rest of the material.
Dutch sextet Mytholic deliver a pretty decent demo, and I’m very interested to hear how they would sound with a good quality production. If you are interested in purchasing the demo, check www.mytholic.com for more information. The price is only 4 Euros!
