I’ve been listenig to Magenta’s “Seven” for over two weeks now, but I still find it hard to put into words why I like this album so much. The first time I played the album I remember being surprised, since both the concept of the album (the seven sins) and the cover made me expect some kind of metal minded music. In stead I was overwhelmed by heavenly atmospheres combined with Howe-like guitarplay and great melodies. The vocals of Christina (She reminds me a bit of Hannah Stobart from the Wishing Tree) immediately got me hooked. The way she combines delicate verses and expressive refrains is quite exceptional.

All songs on the album are averaging around eleven minutes and are structured around the keyboards of mastermind Rob Reed (best known by his former band Cyan). He’s the one that lays down the atmosphere of the songs, which are all very well balanced. There is no over the top soloing, no excessive experimentation and more important enough alternation in melody, rhythm and sound. “Revolutions” the first album of Magenta must be considered more of a studio project. Reed made a wise decision to bring in four musicians to turn Magenta into a real band. I for one can’t wait to see this band live on stage.
