A couple of months ago Thieves’ Kitchen released their third studio album called “Shibboleth”. I’ve been listening to the album for a couple of weeks now and still find it no easy album. Despite the fact that the songs are structured around seemingly simple and rather catchy melodies the songs turn out to be quite complex and somewhat in-accessible. Vocalist Amy Darby, new to the band, seems to be having some trouble fitting in her vocals melodies in with the music. | |
This is a pitty, especially considering the fact that her warm vocals definitely add to the sound on the album. The production of the songs seem to fit some song more than other. The tracks “Spirit Bound” and “Chovihani Rise” for example sound excellent, but the opening track “The Picture Slave sounds a bit flat. “Shibboleth” proves that Thieves’ Kitchen is still growing and that the band has the potential to grow even further.
