When the brothers Gerben and Joop Klazinga decided they wanted to record a high quality progressive rock album, they made a wise decision to bring in several musicians; Knight Area sounds like a band that has been playing together for ages.

The project was called Knight Area. Klazinga compares “The Sun Also Rises” with the music of Camel, Pendragon, Genesis and IQ. Personally I feel that the band Galahad comes closer to the sound of Knight Area and although the music has a typical Dutch sound, the compositions are definitely inspired by UK progressive rock of the eighties and early nineties.
Some characteristics of the music are orchestral keyboards (ala Nolan), weeping guitars (never overdone) and solid drums.

The compositions combine bombastic parts with smooth rhythmic intermezzos where keyboards and flute create beautiful soundscapes; a fine example is “A New Day At Last”. The vocals are by Mark Smit and although I like his sound I feel that the vocal parts are at times a little bit too cliché.
“The Sun Also Rises” is an amazing album that will certainly turn up in several year lists. It’s without a doubt one of the best Dutch progressive rock releases in years, and has the potential to be successful far beyond the borders of our small country.
