The masters of technical death metal are back at the forefront with their new album Souls To Deny on Relapse. In all those years of non existence it’s pretty obvious that the competition took the once so ground breaking work of Suffocation to new and higher levels. Does that make Souls To Deny obsolete? No it doesn’t. Suffocation is still superb at creating fantastic riffs, breaks and musical ideas setting the band apart from much of the competition, with drummer Mike Smith still pushing the levels of tight and flawless drumming.

With so much quality death metal on the market these days, Suffocation will not be as extreme and overwhelming as they once were, but the band’s talent is obvious and so are the tracks on Souls To Deny: A decent album made by a very good band.

I know, it sounds a bit simplistic but that’s just how it is. Not overwhelming anymore, thanks to the incredible quality of their older stuff and all the quality death metal released since. I guess they kind of called that on to themselves. So honestly ask yourselves this: How many bands do you know that in a career of over 10 years manage to release only ground breaking albums?
