This is one of those rare cd’s you don’t actually have to listen to while you’re writing the review. Just looking at the CD gives you exactly the right impression of the music. The album cover features an impressive list of musicians. Names like Mike Stern, Greg How, Steve Lukather and Frank Gamble are quality guaranteed. The title of the album leaves almost no room for the imagination either. OK, you might find it hard to locate the giant steps in the subtitle - in my opinion the songs are too much alike - but the fact that the fusion guitar is the main instrument is pretty clear.
‘Giant Steps In Fusion Guitar’ features twelve tracks, each one featuring a single guitar solist. | |
Most of the songs have been written by John Coltrane (1926-1967), one of the greatest jazz saxophonists ever. These songs have been rearranged (Jeff Richman) to be performed on guitar -there’s not a single saxophone on the album, apart from the ones on the album cover- a job well done. The only track on the album I could have easily done without is the Sound Of Music-track ‘My Favorite Thing’, which is way, way too sweet. Despite this minor criticism I must admit that this album is one of the better tributes and a must have for jazz and fusion fans. (Geert) |
