Picture Of The Moon is a Dutch rock band with clear influences of progressive rock and progressive metal. The band recorded three songs to be released on this sixteen minute mini album. The disc starts with an instrumental track called ‘Fist Picture’. The track has good rhythms and nice melodies. It’s too bad that the drums sound quite horrible. This has nothing to do with the capabilities of drummer Rudolph Saathoff but with the recording or the mixing of the drums. Quite strange since the bass guitar, that sounds OK, was recorded in the same studio.
The tracks that follow feature vocals. These vocals by Michiel Borkent will do for now, but I don’t think that his voice is good enough to reach a broad audience. Borkent reminds me a little bit of Geoff Mann, but I fear that is the only compliment I can think of, listening to his contribution. The music itself is at times not unlike Twelfth Night.
Picture Of The Moon proves capable of coming up with some really good melodies and solo’s. | |
Writing solid songs seems to be more difficult for this young band. The second track ‘Evil Live Secure’ for example features a few original sections (some great Doemaar influences there) which are great in itself, but these sections seem to have simply be pasted into one track, something that just doesn’t work. The third track is probably the track that suits the band best. It’s the heaviest track on the mini album and even features some grunt. It could be me, getting used to the mediocre sound of the mini album, but the sound on this third track seems to be better than the sound of the other songs.
In conclusion not a bad mini album that could have been even better. Next time Picture Of The Moon should be focusing a little bit more on writing songs and the sound of the drums definitely has to improve on future releases. (Geert) |
