Well, in this case I’ll just start with my conclusion. “Dies Irae”, a four track debut EP by Norwegian Gothic Rock band Where Angels Fall is not a bad effort, but it is boring. After twenty minutes you’re glad that “Dies Irae” only features four tracks. Thee tracks in themselves aren’t that bad, but twenty minutes filled with more and more of the same is simply too much. The same actually goes for female vocalist Eirin Bendigtsen, she has a fine voice but the melodies and the capacity are too restricted.
I might be too critical especially taking in mind the fact that this is the first release by this young band. “Dies Irae” does prove that the band has potential. | |
The fact that this band is taking things seriously is obvious in the good production - the sound is very clear - and the broad distribution of the album. The main problem is that as a reviewer you tend to compare new comers with the establishment: Within Temptation, Epica and After Forever. It’s obvious that Where Angels Fall falls short. The aforementioned bands all have their distinctive sound where these Norwegians fall somewhere in between. “Dies Irae” might be the first step on the road to fame, but this road won’t be short and definitely won’t be without obstacles.
