Well Oiled is only the forth studio album in the almost twenty year history of The Quireboys. The band gained major fame in the late eighties with their top three album A Bit Of What You Fancy and even made it to be the opening act of the Rolling Stones. A comparison between the Stones and the Quireboys is quite easy to make. The music isn’t all that different but somehow The Quireboys are more of a party band with a little bit more speed and even catchier riffs (more AC/DC like), which make the music sound fresh even though not all their material is that original. Characteristics of the album are the booze and smoke drenched vocals of Spike, one of the three original members, and the very well timed keyboards of new addition Keith. | |
Another characteristic is the way in which the boys hook fine melodies into their unrestrained rock and roll. This really gives the songs a firm body. The album features nine tracks that are all of equal quality but there’s enough variation to make Well Oiled an interesting album that lasts. The music is perfect in bars, in cars and at festivals but on the negative side I doubt whether the disc gets a lot of playing time in my home stereo. (Geert) |
