Recently thrash metal has made a rather impressive comeback with excellent releases from Exodus, Death Angel and Megadeth to name just a few. Considering the fact that I am a long time thrash metal fan I can safely say that nothing pleases me more than to see the scene struggling slowly back to life again. Necronomicon is another band that is making a comeback, although a bit more underground, every contribution helps. It is another testimony that thrash is alive once more.
Construction Of Evil is everything that thrash metal was during the eighties. It is tight, it is aggressive as a bull gone berserk and most of all it is genuine. It even has an eighties sounding production and album cover to boot. Listening to this CD is like a trip back in time. Influences are a plenty; Testament, Kreator, Metallica and Slayer to just name the standard stuff. The guitar riffs are great but slightly predictable while the vocals are awesome and aggressive; definitely the strongest part of Necronomicon. | |
Towards the end of the album Necronomicon seems to experiment a bit more and a track like “Fireball” is almost more heavy metal than thrash metal while the excellent “Terrorist Attack” shows that the band can play more than straightforward thrash metal. The aggressive and extremely short “Insanity” leans even towards hardcore. The best track of Construction Of Evil is however “Bone Daddy” which features all the best that thrash metal has to offer; 100% intensity and aggression.
Necronomicon deliver a very decent thrash metal album that might not be able to challenge the recent releases of Death Angel or Exodus but is nevertheless far better than the shit that was made during the nineties. It also features two extra live tracks (“Hard Pain” and “Insanity”) as well as a video of “Terrorist Attack”. Nothing really spectacular but just a nice add. (Frank) |
