This four pieced band from Utrecht independently released a self titled track mini album. Although the five tracks on the album are quite diverse, I would characterize this album as sluggish but catchy, a remarkable combination that works out perfectly.
There are a lot of complex contradictions in the music. The album is moody but rocks, it sounds popular yet alternative, it seems to be superficial but is in fact rather profound. Take for example the track `Case Of Affair` where the lyrics are grieving while the music is cheerful. | |
The song `Stevie` combines fragile and slightly hoarse vocals with down tempo but with powerful and catchy instrumentals. Usually this combination leads to boring sleep-inducing songs but the heavy sound of the recording and the excellent production make it work great.
This album is a rare and beautiful example of complexity and contradiction in music and proves that at this moment Stretcher should be considered one of the most creative pop/rock bands in The Netherlands. (Geert) |
