If I had to analyse the music of Joyfalds I’d have to say that most of the stuff you can hear on Amplify is quite boring. Opening track “Flavourless” - I understand how they came up with this title - is an almost single chord guitar track. The bass line is very basic and the vocals of Mart are ‘inspired’ by Coldplay, but since his vocals are not of the quality required, his contribution sounds rather whining. The second track starts off most promising but when the noisy guitars really kick in you get the feeling that you’re listening to “Flavourless” again. A funny thing happened when I played the EP and listened to it in a less intensive way. I have to admit that this simplistic stuff sounds not all that bad when it’s playing in the background.

Nice rhythms and some catchy melodies despite the childish simpleness. The third track is called “Twofold” and is more punk-rock than post-rock. The guitars work out very well in this up-tempo track. As a matter of fact “Twofold” is a pretty good track compared to the first two. Closing track “Perseverance” is an eleven minute down-tempo balladish song where Mart proves that he has more notes up his sleeve as lead singer. The multiple vocal harmonies sound slightly out of tune but therefore also nicely fragile. In conclusion this EP features two songs below average and an average ballad. The only song above average, actually way above average, is “Twofold” but I’m afraid that this is not enough to get a higher rating.
