Holy shit! This is some REAL heavy shit. The title of the album explains a lot already, but multiply it ten times and you’ve got the music Phobia makes. This is fucking heavy grind crust. The fact that this album contains 17 tracks and has a playing time of only 20 minutes says it all.
Phobia is actually a pretty old band, this year they exist 15 years. The band was formed back in 1990 in Orange County, California. And after a lot of albums and even more shows we are in the present. Grind Your Fucking Head In was actually recorded in 2003 but re-released in October 2004, probably due to some label changes or something.
As I said, the music on this cd is REALLY brutal and most of the songs have a length of less than a minute. The production is, in my humble opinion, pretty good. I don’t have other grind material to compare it to, but it sounds good to me. | |
I’d like to pay some extra attention to the vocals of Shane McLachlan. The vocals are brutal, with the word ‘brutal’ written in capitals. They are not disgustingly low or deep, but so fucking aggressive. I can’t use any other words to describe them.
The artwork on Grind Your Fucking Head In is awesome! Both on the cover and on the back of the sleeve are some pretty cool pencil drawings by a guy named Dennis Dread.
So, after 17 minutes of brutal grind crust the cd stops and you think you’re done. BUT, you probably figured out that there is something extra coming. You’re right, there is! This album has a hidden track and I can tell you it’s hilarious. It’s an acoustic blues-like song with socio-political lyrics and clean vocals. But the fact that this song is the last song after the grind crust assault you just barely survived makes it all pretty funny. (Lars) |
