Mortiis did it again! The new album again will shock the world. Mortiis already got a lot of slack when he left Emperor and released music that best can be described as dark ambient music. Every release after “Født til Å Herske” showed an ever-expanding musical development resulting in his latest effort “The Smell Of Rain”. The music on this album can be described as EBM but more of the heavier kind. Think Front242 in their “Evil”days.
Mortiis has taken full control on everything on this album, including the lead vocals. The only guest appearance is by Sarah Jezebel Deva, taking care of the female vocals, lovely as always. | |
On “The Smell Of Rain” Mortiis displays a wide variety of emotions, as well musically as lyrically. From the alienation from society (“Parasite God”) to the cold balladesque “Everyone Leaves”. The major theme is depression and how to deal with it. So it’s not a very happy album but then again that would really be a surprise! Still some of the songs will get you moving on the dance floor like the afore mentioned “Parasite God” and “You Put A Hex On Me”. Again Mortiis will get a lot of slack for this but he will also gain a lot of new fans. And then again, who cares for the stupid and the ignorant? (Jan Geert) |
