You know, it’s nice to be a reviewer; sometimes you receive real crappy albums and sometimes you receive albums that are awesome. From The Tumulus Depths from Ravensblood is such an album; it kicks your ass. I’m no insider in the black metal scene, but I know what I like.

I find this album pretty hard to classify within the black metal scene, but it’s fair enough to say that it is a brutal album. But I’m glad to hear that it’s not a forty minute blast fest, because that’s not really my thing. There are some acoustic and atmospheric passages at the right moments and I’m actually pretty glad that the two guys that form Ravensblood didn’t use any female vocals in the atmospheric parts because it would be detrimental to the music.

The music altogether is composed very well and the song structures are pretty good, though sometimes a little bit predictable. The production of this black metal album is surprisingly good; all the instruments are mixed in very clearly.

If you want to drink some wine with Thor and Odin, get into your drakkar and let the wind flow you to the Norse lands, via the Baltic Sea of course. If that is too much of a trouble for you, just order this album!
