Prime Cuts is an interesting collection of tracks with a leading role for one of the world’s premium drummers Terry Bozzio. Most of the tracks are taken from one of the many projects Bozzio was involved in during the last couple of years. Some of the tracks are unreleased songs, written especially for this release. I must say that this mix of different songs is the biggest plus of this album. The usual drummer solo releases lack variation, on Prime Cuts there’s plenty.
Releasing this disc is a luminous idea of the label Magna Carta. The album is appealing to Bozzio fans (to make sure of that they even included a fifteen minute interview) and people that want to check Bozzio out.

The real brilliance lies in the fact that most tracks are taken from previous Magna Carta releases and Prime Cuts can therefore be considered a Magna Carta sampler, and to be true, it works! I will probably be checking out the Explorer Club album within a few days; an incredible track.
The only downside of the album lies in the newly written songs. I fear that you must have a drummer background to really enjoy stuff like “Sick Jazz Surgery”. I for one have got no idea what ‘a jazzy ride cymbal rhythm’ or ‘a triplet based vamp’ means.
